My client project at first was difficult to get started, nobody replied when I messaged them and on the rare chance I did get a reply they didn’t want anything doing. When I managed to get a start on the project it became a create your own project based work. Thinking of what I wanted to do wasn’t too difficult and after choosing what I wanted it become easier to plan and research. While in the middle of doing this, I came across the Amy Jonson Festival and decided to use this as my client work since it would give me better direction in how to structure my animation. It also gave you a choice on which part of her life to work on, since one of them was basically what I wanted to do it helped.
My idea for the project changed as I was animating it, while I have kept to my storyboard I have added to it as well. After saving it I felt like the information sped up, while I’m not sure if it did this or not I’m planning to sort this along with anything else that needed to be fixed by the festival deadline. My original plan was to colour Amy in collage and have her shown in her plane Indiana Jones style, while this stayed I didn’t colour her in every time she appeared. This reason for this is because after playing around with the Photoshop transparent setting she came up as ghostly and I liked this effect. I also at first had the information on the images as they were moving but this also changed, this was simply to make it clear to read and understand.
If I could change anything about this project it would be finding the Festival sooner and being able to have more time being able to work on this project rather waiting for nobody to respond to me. Other than that this project has gone smoothly.
Apart from the slow start, the client project went well without any problems. I like how my animation turned out in the end. Since the deadline for the festival is on the 31st of May I plan to make sure any issues are fixed and if needed add more to the animation.
This is how I made the masks that the manikin head wears
First I wrapped a pair a manikin heads in cling film, this was so when I used the kitchen roll to make the mask it wouldn’t stick to the head and damage the mask or mark the head. I did this on both sides so I could get four masks once they finally dried. I did try covering the whole face however it fell apart and didn’t stay together.
Once the mask was ready I used a pencil to outline the eyes and lips. I then used pro markers to go over the pencil and colour the mask in.
While going through my client project I decided to enter the Amy Johnson festival since it would count as being a client.
It can’t be longer then 75 seconds and it has to follow an aspect of one of the themes they have asked for.
The themes to choose from are
•The life and flying achievements of Amy Johnson – Telling her story, key moments in her life, her personal struggles and achievements
•Women’s equality and liberation – Amy Johnson campaigned for women’s equality particularly at work. Women in engineering and science, Amy as a role model to introduce more young women to engineering and
•Flight in all its forms – Aircraft engineering, the physics of flight, insect flight – especially moths as Amy flew de Havilland Moth planes throughout her aviation career!
•World cultures, then and now – Reflections on culture, society and politics in the countries and continents at the time of Amy’s flight in 1930, or on the situation
I’m going to work on the first one, her life and flying achievements. This is because it is similar to what I wanted to show before finding this and it is the most interesting one to work on for me.
My idea for my Amy Johnson project was to show information about her and her journey. I first made a few designs before deciding on how I wanted her to look. I also tried collaging her in with a map and train tickets, I liked at how the map turned out since it looks clearer.
My idea was to animate her getting to her plane, then she would fly the same route she took. The way she would fly would look similar to how it looks in the Indian Jones map part. It would also show some of the different things she did while she was doing this, such as when she met new people or had to fix her plane
These are a few test ideas of how she would move
Part of what we have to do this year involves finding a client. However when I was asking I either received no response or when I did get one they didn’t need anything. Since I haven’t been having any luck I have gone down a different route. I have to imagine an animation project, what would it be and where it would take place etc. I came up with 3 different project ideas, these are.
• It would be for the 75th anniversary of her death
• It would be shown in Sewerby hall with her exhibit
• It would be an animation, it would show her accomplishment of flying along with some interesting bits and bobs
• It could also go into her exhibit in hull
• Sewerby hall have a website so something that they might be able to use for that
Reopening of the art museum in hull (Ferens art gallery)
• It would be most likely a poster and leaflets showing when it is reopening.
• The poster would show the building in a style of some of the art that it shows.
• The leaflet would show some of the more well-known artwork alongside with some lesser known ones.
• Could involve this with city of culture
City of culture
• Animation showing all the interesting places to visit (the deep, the museum quarter, Maritime museum etc.)
• Can also show off the many shops and places to eat
• As well as animation could have poster with a collage of the places in hull
The first and last one was agreed that they would be the best ones to do. After some thought I have decided to go for the Amy Jonson one.
This is how the animation should end up looking like. I was told to add more to the masks so instead of fully animating the masks I made the basic idea movement for them. I did it by itself at first then added the hand movements in. I then did a character that would help the mask show the current feeling it was showing. At first I made the character move to see how it would look, after that I put the two together to see how they would look together.
This is the storyboard I have for my animation. Before I could do this properly I needed to decide on what she would feel and a basic idea of what order it should be in. This is how it turned out.
Also while I do have a lot of masks ready to be sorted, the storyboard gave me a better idea of how many masks I should be needing for this project.
In order to make the mask look less like a mask with manikin hands and more person like, I decided to add some string onto the mask to make it seem it has some hair. I coloured the string in the same promarkers I use for her face.
I have also painted in the gloves, this was to make them look more like gloves you would wear on a night out rather then something used for surgery. I couldn’t decide if I wanted them black or red, I gave the colours a quick test and thought the black fit better. Since I am going to use black gloves the materials I’ll be using for her dress will be red.
Just wanted to add for the time being this will be the background i’m using for the speed date.
Also another thing that I haven’t said about my idea, is that before I decided on using masks I was thinking about drawing the idea instead. Rather then one person dealing with a date it would have been a few monsters and people based on real people (example-Bonnie & Clyde)dealing with different emotion dates (example – one date good another date bad). However this was only note written since people along with myself like the mask idea better.
With the expressions it was also suggested that hand movements should be involved as well. I found some surgical gloves and stuffed them with paper. I then tried two different ways they could be animated. One was using string and the other was by using bamboo sticks. I also used a third option which involved a manikin hand. Out of all of them the hand was the better one to use, the bamboo sticks were also good to use, they just needed a better way to handle smother movement. The string however wasn’t helpful at all, I think the way it was tied up didn’t help however the other two ways were far more useful.
I have picked the manikin hand for the movements and for the person/mask date. This is because this way is easy to move around and looks more smooth then the others.
At first I was going to make the expressions from something then stick them on the mask. I scrunched up some paper and stuck them around the different eyes and mouth. I coloured them in with pencil but it hardly showed up. I also tried using Photoshop to colour them in but no detail could be seen.
While doing this I realised that I didn’t decided what I was going to use to colour and add detail in, as well as how I would be making the masks.
